The Quiet Work of Becoming an Artist with Brittany Keller

The Quiet Work of Becoming an Artist with Brittany Keller

Posted by Jeffrey Yanuario on

For Brittany Keller, becoming an artist was never about a single moment. It was something that grew slowly over time, shaped by years of creating, exploring different avenues of art, and following a small dream that eventually became reality.

Today, Brittany finds inspiration in the beauty all around us, from quiet moments in nature to the stories found in books. Working primarily in digital art on her iPad, she creates expressive pieces that celebrate women, connection, and the beauty we see in ourselves and others.

Her creative process is rooted in observation. She looks for moments and scenes that feel worth capturing, whether she finds them while hiking through nature or while imagining the worlds and stories found within the pages of a book. That combination of nature and storytelling has become an important source of inspiration throughout her artistic journey.

Brittany also embraces the natural ebb and flow of creativity. When a creative block comes along, she does not force herself to create. Sometimes, the best thing she can do is step away, take a break, and give inspiration the space to return.

At the heart of Brittany's creative journey is a simple belief: creativity is not a talent that you either have or do not have. It is a skill that can be developed through practice, hard work, and the willingness to keep pushing yourself.

We asked Brittany about the moment she knew she wanted to be an artist, what continues to inspire her, how she works through creative blocks, the people who have supported her along the way, and the advice she would give to artists just starting out.

Meet Brittany Keller

1. Is there one moment you realized you were (or wanted to be) and artist? Describe that moment.

I have always loved art from a young age, I think I have always wanted to be an artist, and have pursued art in many different avenues throughout my life. There is no one moment of realizing I was an artist, I think overtime that small dream slowly became reality through consistency and creativity.

2. What has driven you to be an artist?

Finding the beauty around us and capturing it in different ways. I love the connection that art brings and the beauty people find in it. I draw women a lot and I want women to see the beauty in my work and realize my work is a reflection of them.

3. What is your favorite medium to work with?

Digital art (my ipad)

4. What are you currently working on or excited about?

I am excited to start working on pieces for Fall and Halloween. This is my favorite time of year and I feel like my art really shines through during this season.

5. How do you get through a creative block?

Sometimes just letting it be. Not doing anything or taking a break from drawing if I can, until inspiration sparks again.

6. Is there one person in your life that particularly inspired or encouraged you as an artist?

There is no one person. I am so very lucky to have a close circle of people who support me through and through. My best friends, my mom, and my husband have always encouraged me over the years. I have also, sometimes made them pose for reference photos every now and then ;)

7. What’s one piece of advice that’s shaped your creative journey? Is there one piece of advice you’d give to new or aspiring artists?

The one piece of advice that has helped shape my creative journey is that creativity is not a talent, it is a skill that can be honed. Talent helps make things easier, in any aspect you might be pursuing, but hardwork is what really makes the difference. My advice to new and aspiring artists is to keep going and keep pushing yourself. The only way you can grow and improve and gain confidence in what you are doing is to push yourself and challenge yourself to create new things and try new techniques.

8. What are 5 things currently inspiring you? (e.g., music, books, artists, places, objects)

I find a lot of inspiration in books and hiking through nature. There are so many amazing scenes that deserve to be brought to life in books and so many beautiful things in nature that deserved to be captured in art. I think a combination of the two is what has inspired me throughout my journey in recent years.

10. Where is the best place to view your art?

You can find my art on my Instagram page at @brittanykellerart or you might be able to find it in your local indie bookstore. If you want to shop directly with me, I sell my art on Etsy and Faire!
