Holli Zollinger has always created to make sense of where she's been. After high school she spent years traveling, and somewhere along the way, making things became how she processed it all — new places, new textures, new ways of seeing. What started as painting eventually found its home in pattern design, and today her bold, maximalist work lives on wallpaper, fabric, home goods, and now Denik notebooks.
We sat down with the Moab-based designer to talk about her journey, what keeps her going, and the folk art obsession she can't quit.
1. What has driven you to be an artist?
Art has always been the way I make sense of the world. After high school I spent a lot of time traveling, and creating became an anchor that helped me process new places and life experiences. Over the years it evolved from painting into designing for everyday life, but the motivation has stayed the same — to create work that brings beauty and a sense of connection into people's homes.
2. What is your favorite medium to work with?
While I began my career selling original paintings and art prints, surface pattern design has become one of my favorite creative outlets. I love how it blends hand-drawn artistry with digital tools, allowing my work to live on wallpaper, fabric, journals, greeting cards, and home décor. I love the idea that a simple sketch can find its way onto so many different surfaces, while still holding onto the warmth and character of the original artwork.
3. How do you get through a creative block?
I've learned not to force inspiration. Instead, I change my inputs. I'll spend time in nature, recolor an old design, flip through art books, reorganize my Pinterest boards, or simply start making something without worrying if it's good. Creativity usually returns once I stop chasing it and start observing again.
4. What are you currently working on or excited about?
Nothing too specific, but I am always excited to dive into designing new collections. Lately I've been really inspired by folk art, block prints, vintage textiles, expressive brushstrokes, and organic forms. I love pulling bits and pieces from all of those influences and turning them into something that feels fresh, artistic, and handcrafted.
5. What's one piece of advice that's shaped your creative journey?
Just keep going. Consistency matters more than perfection. Every collection, every painting, every small opportunity builds on itself. Momentum is one of the most powerful things an artist can create.
6. What are 5 things currently inspiring you?
Handmade objects that celebrate imperfection — from ceramics to woven baskets to carved wood (Wabi Sabi style), landscape design, papier-mâché, anything DIY, and folk art.
