Finding Beauty in Everyday Life with ANKA

Finding Beauty in Everyday Life with ANKA

Posted by Jeffrey Yanuario on

Based in Jeju Island, South Korea, ANKA transforms ordinary moments, family life, and quiet daily rituals into whimsical, heartfelt illustrations rooted in observation and imagination.

After studying Fine Arts, ANKA found her artistic practice increasingly centered around finding meaning in everyday experiences. Today, she continues to explore different ways of creating, from drawing with her longtime fountain pen to experimenting with embroidery and other physical forms.

We sat down with ANKA to learn more about her creative journey, the tools and processes behind her work, what inspires her, and what she's excited to explore next.

1. Is there one moment you realized you were (or wanted to be) and artist? Describe that moment.

I've enjoyed the process of creating and making things for as long as I can remember. Ever since I was young, I've been constantly thinking about new ideas—whether for writing, drawing, or making something with my hands—and filling notebooks with them.

I don't think there was a single moment when I became an artist. Rather, it was the continuous act of creating, day after day, that quietly shaped the artist I am today.

2. What has driven you to be an artist?

For practical reasons, my parents were initially against me pursuing a career in art—though they have since become my biggest supporters. Looking back, the determination it took to follow this path and the time and effort I devoted to it became an important part of who I am.

Above all, what continues to drive me is the deep sense of fulfillment I find in creating, and the joy of constantly imagining new ideas and bringing them to life.

3. What is your favorite medium to work with?

I primarily enjoy drawing with a fountain pen on recycled paper. I usually use a LAMY fountain pen. Although I've bought newer ones over the years, the tool I still reach for most is a LAMY pen I've been using for nearly a decade.

I also love working on recycled paper because it changes with the seasons. Depending on the humidity, the paper absorbs ink differently, allowing the lines to bleed a little more or take on a rougher, more organic quality. I enjoy embracing those subtle, unpredictable variations—they become part of the drawing itself.

4. What are you currently working on or excited about?

Recently, I've been exploring ways to transform my illustrations into embroidered pieces using a sewing machine, applying them to clothing, fabric, hats, and other products.

I'm gradually working toward creating my own small brand someday. I know it won't be easy, but I'm genuinely excited about the journey ahead.

5. How do you get through a creative block?

I step away from my artwork and bake bread. Creating something completely different from drawing helps me clear my mind while still enjoying the process of making something with my hands.

Of course, I also enjoy taking long walks and reading novels, but baking has become one of my favorite ways to reset my creativity.

6. Is there one person in your life that particularly inspired or encouraged you as an artist?

My husband, KASIQ, who is also an illustrator, and our children inspire me every day. They are always the first to celebrate my picture books, products, and new artwork, and their excitement and encouragement mean the world to me.

7. What are 5 things currently inspiring you?

Right now, I'm inspired by cats (even though I can't have one), all kinds of plants, music from different cultures around the world, interior design, and my home.

8. Where is the best place to view your art?

Currently, Instagram @ankahahaha is the best place to view my work.
